The Art After Dark program will transform White Bay Power Station on Friday evenings with music, art and outdoor food markets. Across three nights, the Inner West Council Music Series spotlights emerging voices from our own backyard, bringing the sounds, stories and diversity of our local music scene to Biennale’s global stage.

Body Type are an all-female rock group based in Sydney and the Illawarra, NSW made up of Sophie McComish, Annabel Blackman, Cecil Coleman and Georgia Wilkinson-Derums. Their unique post punk sound has been refined across two EPs and two albums and is characterised by an unfaltering intensity. And yet it is hard to define. Guitars spit and swell and slice through harmonies. Moments of elation and bizarre imagery are wrung from the monotony of every day. Vocals knot together, producing ecstatic, slanted melodies.

Following release of their second album, Expired Candy, Body Type toured the UK/EU extensively throughout 2023 including festival appearances at Roskilde and Rock Werchter to huge crowds. The band’s London show featured a cameo from esteemed punk musician Gina Birch (The Raincoats) affirming Body Type’s growing significance in a long lineage of women in punk music.

In 2025, the band visited Velveteen Laboratory Studios in Los Angeles to record their third full-length album with renowned musician and producer Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint, Courtney Barnett, Kim Gordon). The resulting body of work – engineered by Bonnie Knight (Amyl & The Sniffers), mixed by Omar Yakar (The War On Drugs, Perfume Genius) and mastered by Jonathan Boulet (Party Dozen, Arse) – represents a bold step forward for the band creatively and sonically.

Art After Dark – Inner West Music Presents Body Type

Kaleidoscopic sounds to illuminate the summers’ night.
A new day invites us back to our earthly selves, completing Tryp with a restorative blend of deep listening, heavenly hymnals, IDM and mystic folksong on the banks of Karrawirra Parri. Drift through hazy afternoon ambience into the evening’s ecstatic electronica; from the wine-soaked sounds of Wilson Tanner to james K’s downtempo dream pop. A festival tonic for the thinkers, the dreamers and the groovers.

James K is the musical vision of NYC's Jamie Krasner: a vocalist, producer and multidisciplinary artist whose ethereal, genre-defying sound has quietly shaped the trajectory of underground music for over a decade. With releases on UNO NYC, Dial, and Incienso and collaborations with the likes of Yves Tumor, Mykki Blanco, Moin and Oli XL, her acclaimed third album, Friend (2025), returns to her creative core; weaving melody, emotion and technical mastery into a crystalline distillation of her musical eclecticism that feels at once both intimate and expansive.

American multidisciplinary artist Lyra Pramuk (now based in Berlin), brings her unique interpretation of devotional music to Tryp. Combining a rapidly evolving technological approach with the power of the human voice, Pramuk will transport audiences to a transformative and meditative state. Following the success of her last album Fountain, Pramuk’s expansive new release Hymnal is her own book of transformational worship songs, drawing from folk, house, techno, gospel and her formal classical education to construct a symphonic universe.

British-born, Berlin-based Sam Barker has long sought to push the boundaries of experimental dance music. The Berghain resident and co-founder of the Leisure System label, whose accompanying club night held the longest residency in Berghain’s history, consistently looks beyond the realm of 4/4 techno to explore left-field sound design and rhythmic complexity. His string of signature solo releases on Ostgut Ton explore the twisting, rhythmic extremes of modular electronics and his live sets unselfconsciously combine bass music, breakbeat and dub elements into a uniquely shimmering brand of ambient techno that still maintains a strong connection to the dancefloor.

DJ /rupture (Jace Clayton) is a musical nomad whose practice spans continents, genres and sonic cultures. A DJ and turntablist since the mid 90s, DJ /rupture first made waves internationally with the genre-melting Gold Teeth Thief mix, layering hip-hop, Middle Eastern tones, and dancehall - named as one of the "50 Records of the Year" by The Wire in 2001. Known for his mastery of clashing genres and diversity of sound, since then DJ /rupture has continually blurred boundaries, inviting listeners into global soundscapes where rhythm, resonance and radical listening rule.

Reimagining ‘serious’ music with their own unique style of irreverence, DJ and club organiser D-grade loves to play at the margins between ‘mind’ and ‘body’ music. Based on Gadigal land, D-grade revels in frenetic, hypnotic, bossy and beautiful sounds, performing noteworthy sets as part of Dark Mofo, Soft Centre and more. For D-Grade, sharing music is about listening, receiving, exchanging, moving, feeling, responding, and reciprocating.

Andrew Wilson (Andras) and John Tanner (Eleventeen Eston) create joyous, lush soundscapes shaped by the environment in which it was recorded. Laidback, sparse, warm and escalating, their albums are not just collections of compositions but documents of place, woven with the ambient textures of the world around them and painted with improvised electronics and lo-fi textures. Their most recent release, Legends (2025), was recorded among the vines of South Australia’s Manon Farm and captures the agricultural, ambient haze of a working vineyard, where ducks, dogs, tractors and plovers are all fermented along with brass, balalaika, balloon, pipe and synths, letting the sediment linger in the bottle.

Iranian-born, Adelaide based santur player Maryam Rahmani joins with composer and pianist Sebastian Collen to present a conversation in preparation and disassembly of instrumentation and the joy of deep sound. Drawing on each artist's cultural background and craft, combined with non-traditional techniques and experimentation, the work presented is a decidedly moving and fresh take on classical traditions.

Pride Weekender starts BIG 🌈

NYC-born and raised artist Infinite Coles is a vital force in the city’s queer creative and vogue-ballroom scenes. A soulful singer, commanding ballroom performer, and confident rapper, Coles moves effortlessly across house, hip-hop, and soul, pushing boundaries of genre, gender, and expression. Hailing from Staten Island, he brings an unfiltered, shape-shifting approach to music that challenges conventions placed on queer Black artists and casts them aside.

His debut album SweetFaceKillah (Don’t Sleep) showcases this fearless versatility, following collaborations with Joy Orbison, Mella Dee, and Richard Russell’s Everything Is Recorded, plus appearances in Dazed’s cult film Gang. After releasing the deeply personal Divine EP in 2021, created while navigating housing insecurity, Coles now steps fully into his vision — supported by a close-knit creative family — emerging as one of NYC’s most compelling modern musical expressionists.

We are pinching ourselves to be welcoming not one, not two, but three world class selectors for a very special night in Club Freda’s. Yu Su will grace our decks for the first time with a very special 3 hour set to close the night out. Whilst Harvey Sutherland returns after packing out the club space last year. This time he will be playing a 5 hour B2B set with Ibiza’s Bruno Roth.

Kaifeng-born, now London-based Yu Su is a musician, DJ, sound artist and occasional chef. As one of the most prominent Chinese artists with a highly unique voice working across the globe in the last 5 years, her output covers all the ground you’d expect and more. Her multiple critically acclaimed records on UK’s Technicolor (Ninja Tune), Netherlands’s Music from Memory and China’s own Bie Records has seen her nominated for Canada’s Polaris Prize. She has co-produced music with John Carroll Kirby, Duval Timothy and is known for remix works for Parquet Courts, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, and many more. As a DJ, she is unpredictable, idiosyncratic; just “casually having the dance floor transfixed” have put her on the spotlights at clubs and festivals internationally like Dekmantel, Glastonbury, Boiler Room, iii Points, Nuits Sonores, Rainbow Disco Club, Phonox and so on. She has also recently been featured on the cover of Mixmag magazine, marking the first Chinese cover star. She has composed for feature films and fashion brands like Sacai, Jimmy Choo and London/Shanghai based SAMUEL GUÌ YANG.



Harvey Sutherland, the Melbourne-born record producer, keyboard player, club DJ and bandleader, made a name amongst his hometown’s electronic underground with a string of cult dance singles. Early 12-inches like ‘Bermuda’ and ‘Priestess’ were records in love with classic soul and disco, but his debut album “Boy” was guided by his obsessional traits and habits, ending up in a place he describes as “Neurotic Funk”. His latest album “Debt” is an exercise in techno minimalism — laser-focused club jams like ‘Hummingbird’ and ‘Nobody Like U’ set the stage for Harvey’s next chapter. A seasoned performer, he’s taken his live band to Glastonbury, dragged his Juno-60 into Berghain and turned the Melbourne Recital Centre into a full-fledged nightclub. Eclectic and groovy, Harvey Sutherland is Neurotic Funk.



Bruno Roth is a special guest, all the way from the White Isle. 10th-generation Ibicenco, his family have a rich musical history in Ibiza, with Bruno carrying the torch via his own productions, Cas Gayati label and expertly-selected records in the tradition of the golden years of Balearic club culture. His Australian debut will take you back to Pacha in ’98, whether you were there or not!
